Garena published official usage data on March 10, 2026, confirming what the Free Fire OB52 AR meta actually looks like at the player level. The list covers assault rifles in both Battle Royale and Clash Squad, and three weapons appear on both rankings: the AK47, XM8, and Groza. That overlap is the story. When the same rifle wins in a 25-minute BR match and a 3-minute Clash Squad round, it tells you something about raw efficiency, not player preference.
This piece breaks down why those three ARs lead the field. Not opinion. DPS figures, TTK values, and what OB52 specifically changed.
#What Garena's Usage Data Shows
The official list splits by mode, which matters. Battle Royale rewards flexibility, mid-range stability, enough range to contest airdrops, enough accuracy to win sustained firefights. Clash Squad rewards burst: the ability to win a fight in the first two seconds before the opponent's economy recovers.
The SCAR leads Battle Royale usage, which is the least surprising finding in the entire dataset. What's actually interesting is that the AK47, XM8, and Groza all appear in both lists. The SCAR does not appear in the Clash Squad data at all. That single omission explains the split between "safe" and "optimal."
Battle Royale most-used ARs (official, March 2026):
- SCAR
- XM8
- AK47
- Groza
Clash Squad most-used ARs (official, March 2026):
- AK47
- Groza
- XM8
Three weapons cross both lists. The SCAR stays in BR. Everything else is noise.
#The Four ARs: Full Stat Breakdown
All stats current for OB52 as verified against calculators.games (updated March 12, 2026) and official Garena patch notes.
| Weapon | Damage | RPM | DPS | Close TTK | Armored TTK | Headshot Mult. |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AK47 | 61 | 560 | 569 | 0.32s | 0.54s | 2.27x |
| XM8 | 57 | 600 | 570 | 0.30s | 0.50s | 2.00x |
| SCAR | 53 | 610 | 539 | 0.29s | 0.59s | 2.11x |
| Groza* | 61 | 570 | ~579 | ~0.32s | ~0.52s | 2.00x |
*Groza stats post-OB52 buff applied (+3% damage, +10% armor penetration, +8% range). Airdrop-exclusive.
The DPS figures are close enough that the real differentiation sits in two places: headshot multiplier and armor penetration. The AK47's 2.27x headshot multiplier is the highest in this group. At max level with a headshot, it one-shots unarmored targets. Against Level 3 armor, the Groza's new +10% armor penetration from OB52 narrows the gap it previously had against armored targets.

#Why the SCAR Drops Out of Clash Squad
The SCAR's 53 base damage is the lowest of the four. In Clash Squad, players start with Level 2 armor minimum and quickly upgrade to Level 3. The SCAR's armored TTK sits at 0.59s, 18% slower than the XM8 (0.50s) and 9% slower than the AK47 (0.54s) in the same armor scenario.
| Weapon | Armored TTK (Lv. 2 vest) | Armored TTK (Lv. 3 vest) | Shots to Kill (Lv. 3) |
|---|---|---|---|
| AK47 | 0.43s | 0.54s | 6 |
| XM8 | 0.40s | 0.50s | 6 |
| SCAR | 0.47s | 0.59s | 7 |
| Groza | ~0.41s | ~0.52s | 6 |
The SCAR requires 7 shots to kill a player in Level 3 armor vs. 6 for the other three. In a mode where fights are decided in under a second of reaction time, that extra shot is a structural disadvantage. The SCAR earns its BR spot because of low recoil and consistent mid-range performance, not raw killing speed. Clash Squad simply punishes the stat floor too hard.
#What OB52 Did to the Groza
The Groza was already an airdrop-tier weapon before OB52. The patch buffed it further:
| Metric | Pre-OB52 | OB52 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Damage | Baseline | +3% | Increased |
| Armor Penetration | Baseline | +10% | Significant increase |
| Range | Baseline | +8% | Extended |
The armor penetration increase is the meaningful one. Armor penetration in Free Fire reduces the effective damage reduction of enemy vests. A +10% boost means the Groza now cuts through Level 3 armor more efficiently than any common AR. Combined with its 61 base damage, the post-OB52 Groza genuinely threatens armored targets faster than pre-patch.
The trade-off is still access. You cannot buy a Groza in the Clash Squad store and cannot guarantee looting one in BR. It appears in high-tier airdrops and the Arsenal. The usage data showing it on both lists reflects how frequently the top Diamond+ players prioritize airdrop control, a playstyle decision the stats are confirming, not driving.

#AK47 vs XM8: The Real Choice
The Groza is an airdrop weapon. The usable decision for most ranked lobbies is AK47 vs XM8. The usage data shows them extremely close on both lists.
The raw DPS gap is effectively zero: AK47 at 569, XM8 at 570. The TTK difference at close range is 0.02 seconds, which is below human reaction threshold. Where they actually diverge:
AK47 advantages:
- 2.27x headshot multiplier (vs. XM8's 2.00x), 13.5% higher headshot damage
- 30-round magazine vs. XM8's 25-round magazine, 20% more shots per reload
- Consistent floor damage: 61 base is unambiguously higher than 57
XM8 advantages:
- Built-in 2x scope (no attachment slot required)
- 600 RPM vs 560 RPM, faster rate of fire reduces missed-shot cost
- 0.50s armored TTK vs AK47's 0.54s, marginally faster against armor
- Better sustained accuracy due to lower inherent recoil pattern
The AK47 punishes headshot accuracy. The XM8 compensates for inconsistent aim. At Diamond rank and above, where headshot rates are meaningfully higher, the AK47's multiplier generates more value than the XM8's recoil assistance. Below Diamond, the XM8 wins for exactly the opposite reason. See the full weapon comparison tool to run these side by side with attachment variations.
#Mode-Specific Verdict
The usage data split across BR and CS reflects different optimization problems, not player confusion.
Battle Royale: The SCAR leads usage because it is the lowest-skill-floor AR that remains viable at all engagement ranges. The XM8's scope makes it the preferred mid-range pick once players upgrade past SCAR comfort. The AK47 and Groza concentrate in late-circle scenarios where raw damage output and armor penetration matter more than forgiving recoil.
Clash Squad: The AK47 leads the Clash Squad list. The reason is straightforward: 30-round magazine size means AK47 players can frequently win a round without reloading, while XM8 users with 25 rounds sometimes face the reload penalty mid-engagement. In a mode with no health regeneration between rounds, that efficiency matters at every price point in the buy phase.
The SCAR's absence from the CS list is not a coincidence. It is the correct market signal that the player base has done the math on armored TTK.
#AR Tier Ranking (OB52)
Based on the official usage data, stat profiles, and OB52 changes:
| Tier | Weapon | Mode Fit |
|---|---|---|
| S | Groza / Groza-X | BR + CS (airdrop dependent) |
| A | AK47 | BR + CS |
| A | XM8 | BR + CS |
| B | SCAR | BR only |
| B | M4A1 | BR (mid-range specialist) |
| C | FAMAS | CS budget pick only |
The Groza sits at S-tier with an asterisk that has always existed: availability. You cannot build a consistent ranked strategy around a weapon you find in one in five games. For floor-to-ceiling rankings based on the current OB52 character meta, check the Free Fire weapon tier list for OB52.
#The OB53 Variable
OB53 is confirmed for April 8, 2026. Pre-advance server leaks indicate Woodpecker may receive a recoil stabilization buff that moves it into marksman relevance. There are also unconfirmed hints at Clash Squad economy adjustments. If the CS buy phase changes, particularly if weapon prices shift, the AK47's current dominant position in that mode could erode toward the XM8 simply based on cost-efficiency per round.
Nothing is confirmed yet. What is confirmed: the current OB52 AR meta is AK47, XM8, and Groza by official Garena data, and the stat profiles support exactly why those three cleared the field. The SCAR is fine. "Fine" does not lead usage charts.
